Student's Vermicompost: production at The Cochin College

The Bhoomitrasena Club and Department of Zoology at The Cochin College, in collaboration with Plan@Earth and the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India, has successfully implemented a Student’s Vermicompost Project. This initiative promotes sustainable waste management by utilizing Eudrilus eugeniae (African earthworms) to convert organic waste into nutrient-rich vermicompost. Students actively participated in the process, from loading vermipots with organic materials to harvesting and packaging the compost. The project enhances soil fertility, reduces the need for chemical fertilizers, and supports environmental conservation. By integrating scientific knowledge with practical experience, this initiative aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goal 11—creating sustainable cities and communities through eco-friendly practices.
