The Bhoomithrasena Club, in association with the Department of Forestry and the Department of Botany, celebrated World Environment Day on 5th June 2025 at the Seminar Hall of Sir Syed College, Taliparamba. The program aligned with the global theme “Beat Plastic Pollution” and aimed to spread awareness on environmental protection and sustainable waste management.
The event was organized in collaboration with the Kerala Solid Waste Management Project (KSWMP), DPMU Kannur, District Suchitwa Mission, Kannur, and the Tropical Biodiversity Action & Research Center (TBARC).
Programme Overview
- Inaugural Session
- The programme commenced at 10:00 a.m. with a welcome note and introductory remarks highlighting the significance of World Environment Day.
- First Session – World Environment Day Talk
- Topic: “Breaking free from plastic and preserving the tropical paradise”
- Resource Person: Zakiya P. C., Environment Officer, KSWMP, Kannur.
- The talk focused on the harmful impacts of plastic pollution and emphasized practical steps towards reducing single-use plastic in daily life.
- Second Session – Environmental Awareness
- Topic: “Sustainable Waste Management Practices”
- Resource Person: Sujana M., Coordinator, TBARC.
- The session covered waste segregation methods, composting techniques, and community-level waste reduction strategies.

- Discussions on local environmental challenges and possible community solutions.
- Reinforcement of the need for individual responsibility in tackling plastic pollution.
Outcome
The celebration enhanced students’ awareness of plastic pollution and waste management, encouraging them to adopt sustainable practices in their daily lives.
