Forest Immersion: Nedumkayam Wilderness Experience at Rouzathul Uloom Arabic College


The Bhoomithrasena Club of Rouzathul Uloom Arabic College successfully organized a two-day residential natural study camp at Nedumkayam Forest, Nilambur on January 21-22, 2025. The camp was designed to provide students with immersive learning experiences about forest ecosystems, wildlife conservation, and environmental protection through direct interaction with forest environments and guidance from forest department officials.

Participants

The camp was attended by:

• 30 student members of the Bhoomithrasena Club

• Mr. Shabi Suhail (Co-Faculty in Charge, Bhoomithrasena Club)

• Mr. Shareef K (College Librarian)

• Ms. Rubeena (IT in-charge)

Forest Department Officials

The camp received valuable support and expertise from the Kerala Forest Department officials:

• Mr. Daniklal (Divisional Forest Officer) - Camp Inaugurator

• Mr. Riyad (Section Forest Officer) - Camp Coordinator from the Forest Department

The camp was formally inaugurated by Mr. Daniklal, Divisional Forest Officer, who highlighted the ecological significance of Nedumkayam Forest and emphasized the importance of youth involvement in conservation efforts. In his inaugural address, he commended the Bhoomithrasena Club for organizing educational initiatives that connect students with nature and foster environmental stewardship.

Nature Conservation Sessions

Forest officials conducted in-depth sessions on various aspects of nature preservation, covering topics such as:

• Biodiversity conservation strategies

• Forest fire prevention and management

• Impact of human activities on forest ecosystems

• Sustainable forest management practices

• Role of indigenous communities in forest conservation

River Water Conservation

• The watershed ecosystem of Nilambur forests

• Threats to river systems from pollution and encroachment

• Water conservation techniques and their implementation

• The importance of riparian ecosystems

• Community-based water conservation initiatives

Wildlife Study

• Identification of animal species and their habitat requirements

• Animal behavior and adaptation strategies

• Human-wildlife conflict mitigation

• Wildlife census methodologies

• Conservation status of various species found in the region

Forest Ecology

• Guided nature walks identifying various plant species

• Discussion on forest stratification and ecological niches

• Hands-on study of soil composition and forest floor ecology

• Observation of symbiotic relationships in the forest

Experiential Activities

Camp Fire: An evening camp fire was organized where students shared their experiences and insights gained during the day. The setting provided an opportunity for reflection on environmental issues and fostered team bonding. Folk songs and cultural performances by the students added to the enriching experience.

Group Activities

Several team-building and educational activities were conducted:

• Nature scavenger hunt to identify forest resources

• Team debates on conservation issues

• Nature photography and documentation

Group Discussions

• Climate change impacts on forest ecosystems

• Role of youth in environmental conservation

• Traditional ecological knowledge vs. modern conservation approaches

The Natural Residential Study Camp at Nedumkayam Forest proved to be an immensely beneficial educational initiative for the Bhoomithrasena Club members. The combination of expert guidance from forest officials, hands-on learning activities, and the immersive forest environment created a holistic learning experience that transcended conventional classroom education.

The camp successfully achieved its objective of sensitizing students about forest conservation, wildlife protection, and environmental stewardship. The knowledge gained and the experiences shared are expected to inspire participants to become responsible environmental citizens and potentially pursue careers or volunteer opportunities in environmental conservation.

The Bhoomithrasena Club extends its sincere gratitude to the Kerala Forest Department, particularly Mr. Daniklal (DFO) and Mr. Riyad (SFO), for their invaluable support and guidance throughout the camp.
