Bhoomitrasena Club in the college ( Code No: 107/EKM/05/10 ), formed with support from Directorate of Environment and Climate Change, Government of Kerala, aims at grooming environmentally conscious and socially responsive young women who will value the bounties of nature and strive to preserve them. The green activities of the college have also won accolades winning the second best BMC club in central Kerala from the Department of Environment and Climate Change, Govt of Kerala in 2012, Suchitwa Haritha award instituted by Mithradam and Rajagiri outreach in 2015-16, Paristhithi Mithra award instituted by CEERD, St. Stephen’s College, Uzhavoor in 2016 and 2020, best Bhoomitra Sena Club award amongst the colleges in central Kerala for the year 2016-17 from the Department of Environment and Climate Change, Government of Kerala and the best environment project award instituted by World Malayalee Council in 2019.

Activities

  • To sensitize the college community about the harmful effects of plastic waste and promote sustainable alternatives through awareness sessions, educational presentations, and eco-friendly product initiatives, encouraging behavioral change towards a plastic-free lifestyle.
  • To sensitize student representatives and faculty members on critical environmental issues, particularly land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience, in line with the UNEP theme for World Environment Day 2024. To promote proactive engagement through departmental seminars and practical resources, encouraging sustainable thinking and community-centered action. To build awareness and capacity among the college community to address environmental challenges through informed discussions, nudges, and knowledge-sharing.
  • To minimize the use of paper and plastic on campus through conscious decisions in printing, project submissions, and event planning. To promote eco-conscious alternatives in academic and extracurricular activities by encouraging the use of biodegradable and reusable materials. To instill environmental responsibility among students by mandating sustainable practices in project presentation and celebration preparations. To foster innovation in sustainable practices by encouraging students to creatively identify plastic-free alternatives for gift wrapping, decoration, and communication. To ensure environmental sustainability in student governance processes by conducting green elections using eco-friendly materials only.
  • To identify and evaluate viable plant leaf-based alternatives to single-use plastic plates and bowls with a specific focus on environmental sustainability, technical feasibility, and economic viability. To conduct a comprehensive market analysis of currently available leaf-based products in India and assess the comparative advantages of local production within the Ernakulam district. To examine the durability, availability, and supply chain stability of locally available plant leaves such as banana, areca palm, and teak for large-scale production. To estimate production costs and assess the financial practicality of establishing local units for manufacturing eco-friendly utensils made from plant leaves.
  • To actively discourage the use of single-use plastic products among the college community. To promote awareness about the environmental impact of plastic usage and encourage the adoption of sustainable, eco-friendly alternatives. To facilitate access to affordable and practical substitutes by introducing a curated list of vendors and companies offering biodegradable and plastic-free products. To instill a culture of conscious consumption and environmental responsibility among students, faculty, and staff.
