About Maharaja's College Maharaja's College, pread over a 25-acre campus, stands right in the heart of the happening city of Kochi, with easy accessibility by road, rail, air, metro rail and waterways. The college campus is refreshingly lush and verdant because of the shady trees and their thick foliage and fresh water ponds that lend a sylvan ambience to the premises. In 2014-15, the college was elevated to the status of an autonomous college. It is the first and the only government autonomous college in Kerala. College offers courses in subject areas ranging from arts, science, humanities, and physical education. It offers 20 undergraduate programs. 22 Post Graduate Programs, and an Integrated Postgraduate Programme in Archaeology and Material Cultural Studies. The college has earned recognition as a Centre of Excellence in the state from the Government of Kerala owing to its rich tradition and enviable triumphs in all areas. The science departments of the college were provided special assistance under the FIST (Fund for improvement of S&T Infrastructure) program of the Department of Science and Technology (DST) in 2010. University Grants Commission (UGC). There are currently 17 departments offering doctoral research leading to Ph.D. National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) reaccredited the college with an A grade in 2021.

Activities

  • I. To prepare handmade paper from different agro-waste plant materials such as Eichhornia crassipes, Musa paradisiaca, Cocos nucifera, Ananas comosus, Citrus sinensis, Allium cepa, Allium sativum, Citrullus lanatus, Artocarpus heterophyllus, and Mikania micrantha. ii. To evaluate the water absorption potential of the prepared handmade paper samples. iii. To determine the oil absorption capacity of the handmade paper samples. iv. To study the methylene blue colour absorption potential of the prepared papers. v. To analyse the water solubility behaviour of the handmade paper samples. vi. To determine the pH characteristics of the prepared paper samples. vii. To evaluate the fragility and durability of the papers using the folding endurance test.
  • To familiarize participants with the biodiversity of wetland ecosystems, including their flora and fauna. To create awareness about the ecological importance of wetlands and the ecosystem services they provide. To provide hands-on learning opportunities through field observation of wetland habitats. To enhance understanding of the relationships between organisms and their wetland environment. To promote the conservation and sustainable management of wetlands.
  • To document the lichen diversity present in Subhash Chandra Bose Park and prepare a baseline inventory of lichen species. To identify and record the distribution of lichens on different tree species and substrates within the park. To assess the ecological status of the park using lichens as bioindicators of environmental quality and air pollution. To generate baseline data for future biodiversity monitoring, ecological assessments, and conservation planning. To promote awareness about lichens and their ecological importance among students and the public. To provide hands-on training in biodiversity documentation and field identification techniques for students and nature enthusiasts.
  • To document and assess the bird diversity present in the Maharajas College campus. To create awareness among students about local avian biodiversity and its conservation. To provide participants with practical exposure to bird identification and biodiversity monitoring techniques. To contribute valuable bird observation data to the Campus Bird Count (CBC) initiative. To promote interest in nature observation, citizen science, and wildlife conservation.
  • To create awareness about sustainable and eco-friendly food production practices. To introduce participants to oyster mushroom cultivation as a nature-based livelihood option. To promote the efficient utilization of agricultural and organic waste materials. To encourage environmental conservation through sustainable agricultural practices.
